9A Testing the Hypothesis Part 2

The first person I interviewed was a friend of mine, named Sam (a senior  pre-medical student at UF. Sam never goes to Library West because he thinks the amount of people there is too distracting. He only goes to the Medical Library because he feels that everyone who goes there has the same intentions as he does.

The second person that I interviewed was one of my best friends named Anthony, a junior at UF. Although he previously used Library West, he has found the Law Library which is closer to where he lives on fraternity row. He has found that there is a lot more seating at the Law Library and it is much quieter.

The third person that I interviewed was a random girl who I saw studying outside of the library in the Plaza of the Americas. Her name is Katie and she is a sophomore at UF. She said that she prefers studying outside than in a stuffy library anyway so she just does not even bother looking for seating inside.

The fourth person that I interviewed was my friend Stacey, a sophomore at UF, who prefers to study in her bedroom from the comfort of her bed rather than in a crowded library. She doesn’t like seeing people she knows and prefers to avoid judgement.

The fifth, and last person that I interviewed was my friend Jason. Jason is a freshman at UF. Jason doesn’t like to study. He believes that studying is not necessary. He thinks that if you go to class and pay attention, that you do not need to study and reteach yourself. Jarett does not go to the library.

Who- These students are similar to those that are usually effected by the issue of computer overcrowding. The reason that they are not effected personally though, are because they either go to less populated libraries (like the Law Library) or do not go to libraries.

What- After my five interviews listed above, I have come to the conclusion, that maybe if the solution that I have selected was implemented, then more students would find themselves going to Library West.

Why- All of the people that I selected could in fact go to Library West and are all UF students. The reason that they do not for the most part, is they choose other places to study or just do not choose to study. The entire UF population COULD be effected and all fall into the same boundary but those that I interviewed do not because of other variables.

Inside the Boundary-
Who: Students who go to Library West.
What is the need: More seating with less computer space.
Why: There are too many bulky computers that are taking up room for students to sit and study.

Outside the Boundary-
Who: Students that don’t go to Library West (or study).
What is not the need: To find a seat in Library West.
Alternative: Students who do not go to the library or crowded libraries will not be effective by the removal of computers.

8A-Solving the Problem

1)    The problem that I am looking to solve is that there are no available seats at the University of Florida libraries. I interviewed five different students who attend UF and they all agreed that we could use more seating or libraries in our systems.

2)    I believe there is a solution to this issue. We either need to find the funding for another library or remove all of the bulky monitors from the inside of our current libraries. As we strive to become more of an academic university, we need to have the materials to make it possible. Obviously the extra library would be more efficient, but removing old and bulky computers that a majority of students do not even use anymore (because laptops have become more common).

7A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

1. The library is always insanely packed and there are never available open seats.

2.  Who: Students at The University of Florida

3. What: There are never available seats at the library.

4. Why: There are more unused computer monitors than seats, and during populated study times, this is not enough..

Testing who: This issue effects most University of Florida students.

Testing what: I am testing to see if other University of Florida students feel the same as I do about seats at the library.

Testing why: I am testing to see WHY other students think this is a problem (why it happens).

1. Sydney R. Sophomore at The University of Florida

Q: How many times a week do you go to the Library? Which ones?
A: Twice. I usually go to Library West.

Q: Do you ever find trouble finding a place to sit?
A: Literally always.

Q: Why do you think you think the library is so populated?
A: Because there is a Starbucks and its quiet.

Q: Do you think there is any type of solution to the overcrowding of libraries?
A: I guess they could build more.

Q: Do you think adding seats would make you study more?
A: Yeah. Going to the library would not be such a hassle.

4) After conducting the interviews I found that not everyone was keen to the idea of more seating. This was an issue of being distracted while trying to study and I don’t think they took into account the time they wasted looking for a seat. Another factor that influencing the seating issue was which library the student goes to. Those who went to West and Newell found more problems than those who did not. I think that this opportunity is still promising and there are multiple solutions to this issue that would overall benefit UF students.

5A- Identifying Local Opportunities

Independent Florida Alligator, The: University of Florida (Gainesville, FL)

1.Strict regulations leave no space for adult stores in Gainesville

2. https://infoweb-newsbank-com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/apps/news/document-view?p=WORLDNEWS&t=pubname%3AIFAG%21Independent%2BFlorida%2BAlligator%252C%2BThe%253A%2BUniversity%2Bof%2BFlorida%2B%2528Gainesville%252C%2BFL%2529&sort=YMD_date%3AD&maxresults=20&f=advanced&val-base-0=&fld-base-0=Title&docref=news/163DC461ED5EE9F8

3. In the early 1990s, Gainesville was high on crime and high on adult sex stores. There were concerns that adult sex stores, and adult entertainment clubs were the reason for higher crime rates in Alachua county. In 1994, the commissioner limited where these promiscuous establishments could exist. At the time, Cafe Risque owner opened another club similar to it called Cafe Expresso. Because of the ban, Cafe Expresso could not stay in business. Cafe Risque is the only sex club/store allowed in Alachua County because of it's grandfathered zoning in 2004. Since this ban, the crime rate has gone down tremendously.

4. The issue in this article is that there is a ban on sex stores and clubs in Gainesville due to their correlation to excess crime.

5. The people who would have the problem with this article are the owners of adult sex stores/clubs and those who engage in promiscuous adult behaviors.

3. The Copper Monkey, a popular mid town bar was sold for around $80,100.01. This bar slowly was on the decline as the owner was unable to keep up with profits when rent was upped from 7,000 per month to 8,500 per month. Their usual clients were devastated as the local hotspot was sold to what is now known as JJ's tavern. There was an auction for space and the Copper Monkey has been relocated.

4. The issue is in this article that a popular food hot spot went out of business and was replaced for a bar

5. The people who would have a problem with this article would be the owner of the Copper Monkey and those who regularly visited the restaurant.

4A Forming an Opportunity Belief

1) I believe that there is an opportunity to create an easier way to fix iPhones in Gainesville. If Apple were to open up in Gainesville, FL they would be booming with business and University of Florida students would not struggle to fix their phones.

2) The unmet need in this opportunity is that college students do not have enough places in Gainesville to get their IPhones/Apple products fixed. Apple is monopolizing the world. A majority of college students use Apple products. At the University of Florida, if you are to crack, damage, or break your iPhone or laptop, it has to be sent away to Apple and you are without the technology for weeks because there is no location locally to fix your product. I think that this opportunity is definitely (100%) possible. I have no doubt that an Apple store in Gainesville could solve wonders.

3) University of Florida/Santa Fe Community College students in Gainesville, Florida

4)

INTERACTION 1
Anthony B. Junior.
1) Do you use/own Apple Products? If so, how many?
Yes I do. I have 2
2) Have you ever damaged or broken your phone since living in Gainesville?
Yeah my phone has been cracked for months.
3) How has not having an Apple Store in Gainesville affected your lifestyle here?
It's annoying I can't wait to go home and get a new phone.
4) How would you feel if we opened an Apple Store in Gainesville?
We need one.

INTERACTION 2
Jarett A. Junior.
1) Do you use/own Apple Products? If so, how many?
Yes.  I have a computer, watch, iPad, iPhone, and AirPods.
2) Have you ever damaged or broken your phone since living in Gainesville?
Yes. On the fourth of July.
3) How has not having an Apple Store in Gainesville affected your lifestyle here?
I had to spend $872 at ATT to buy a new phone.
4) How would you feel if we opened an Apple Store in Gainesville?
Incredible.

INTERACTION 3
McKenna E. Junior.
1) Do you use/own Apple Products? If so, how many?
Yeah everyday. I have two.
2) Have you ever damaged or broken your phone since living in Gainesville?
Yeah hahah a lot
3) How has not having an Apple Store in Gainesville affected your lifestyle here?
It honestly sucks I have to drive to Jacksonville every time I need to get it fixed.
4) How would you feel if we opened an Apple Store in Gainesville?
I'd be thrilled.

INTERACTION 4
Helena W. Junior.
1) Do you use/own Apple Products? If so, how many?
Yeah I have an iPhone.
2) Have you ever damaged or broken your phone since living in Gainesville?
Probably once a month.
3) How has not having an Apple Store in Gainesville affected your lifestyle here?
I have to wait to go home every time mine breaks.
4) How would you feel if we opened an Apple Store in Gainesville?
That'd be awesome!

Reflect
After my iterations, I have come to the conclusion that my opportunity is 100% completely valid. I interviewed four everyday college students at the University of Florida. One with four Apple products, one with a singular Apple product, and two with two Apple products. This proves my theory that a majority of college students own at least one Apple product. Every student struggles with a broken device every once and a while and the fact that there is no quick fix in Gainesville with all of the people in possession of these devices is absurd. Being an Apple user myself, I have broken my phones many times and I believe that talking to other students about the subject definitely proved my point for the opportunity.

Summarize
I believe that a majority of this opportunity is present. I'd say 95% of the opportunity is present.  Not having an Apple Store in Gainesville has negatively effected students. I did not find myself having to adapt to the opportunity as everyone who I interviewed agreed with it. Obviously I will continue and research more of the opportunity and try to gain information from potential customers.

My Entrepreneurship Story

The first time I took an interest in Entrepreneurship was when I was entering middle school. I was auditioning for an Arts magnet school and needed to come up with a product. I created "The Backpack Kitchen" which was basically a large backpack with small easy-bake-like appliances inside. The purpose of this was for those who were on the go and needed to cook their food quick and efficiently. I also was required to create a one minute pitch to make my listeners want to purchase my product. This audition made entrepreneurship seem possible and fun to me rather than scary and confusing. This sparked my interest.

I am enrolled in this class because it is a requirement for Innovation Academy. I think that innovation and entrepreneurship go hand in hand. Although this is not similar to my major, I really do enjoy the idea of entrepreneurship and business and I am looking forward to learning the basis of starting a business, running a business, and business as a whole.

When I first began this assignment, I believed that it was going to be very simple to come up with twenty things that bothered me. I could name hundreds of thinks that irked me. As I actually started brain storming though, I found that there are so many things that bothered me but not many things that also had a logical reason as to why. I found myself thinking too hard into what bothered me and realized I was missing very simple things. There are so many “ugh” moments in my everyday life which I have come to terms with but never thought about the possibility of fixing it. For example, I have accepted that every time I get into my car it is not a guarantee that I will be able to connect to wifi. I am learning that there is a reason for everything that happens in life and every mishap that we encounter.
